UM-Dearborn Student Government Leadership does not Accept Stipends

I am honored to be part of such a respectable group of Student Government leaders. The Executive Board of the University of Michigan-Dearborn Student Government will not be accepting their stipends this year and are instead putting that money towards more Student Government advocacy, or possibly even back into the University's account. The stipends add up to about $20,000. This is a very selfless act, especially when times are as hard as they are in the economy.

Student Loans surpass Credit Card debt in United States

When I recently met with Monique Teal and Chris Hicks from the United States Student Association, they shared some interesting news with me. This was not news that I wanted to hear, but definitely something that I needed to share with you. If this does not convince you to join our fight for Higher Education in Michigan, I do not know what will. Student Loan debt has surpassed Credit Card debt in the United States! Check out this Wall Street Journal article on the USSA website for more information. The article says that in June 2010, students owed about $830 billion (yes, billion) dollars on Student Loans throughout the United States.

Update on September Conference

At least 11 schools will be attending the conference at Michigan Technological University! I would like to welcome Lake Superior State University, as it will be their first time attending a conference! This year is getting off to a great start, and there is no better time for SAM to become stronger than now, with the state that the Michigan economy is in. Please continue to check your email from now until the conference. MiVote and YouTube Videos

I have uploaded videos about Higher Education to YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/cardidemonaco?feature=mhum) and MiVote (need to be approved first). Specifically, I answered the first two questions that we sent to all of the candidates. I will be finishing the last five questions soon.

Post your own videos on MiVote (mivote.org)! This is an important election year, and that is a very easy way to get your voice heard. Email me with a link to your video, and we may post it on the SAM MiVote page. Thanks!

September 2010 Conference

September is coming up on us fast! (And so is the end of the summer...) So get ready for the Conference at Michigan Technological University. The Conference will be Saturday the 18th from 9am-5pm and Sunday the 19th from 9am-noon. If you have any questions about logistics for the Conference, as always, contact the Secretary, Justin Brugman (jbrugman@mistudents.org).

An email has already been sent out about lodging to all the Delegates. If you did not receive it, but should have, please let Justin know. The Itinerary for the weekend will be sent out in a few weeks. If you are planning on bringing up an Amendment or Resolution for debate, please submit it to the Executive Board (sam@mistudents.org) no later than September 8th. Thank you!

New Website - Enhanced Collaboration

The new website is finally up! Please take a look around. Get familiar with the items on the site, and especially get familiar with the items on the site once you login if you have a User Name. If you are a member of SAM and do not have a User Name, please contact me (cdemonaco@mistudents.org).

More content will be added, as well as new features, as time goes on. One of SAM's goals this year is to keep its members and their respective Student Bodies educated on Higher Education. This website will be a key tool in achieving that goal.
